This piece is part of the Story Collection. It's story can be found here:
Off the coast of Oahu, a pod of humpback whales annually congregates. The youngest of the pod, and smallest, is Bindi. Bindi is 13 feet long and weighs 2,000 pounds. She spends her days with her mother, Lua, exploring the vast ocean and causing trouble amongst the sea creatures. More than anything, Bindi loves to sing. Her song can be heard by marine biologists at a nearby research center, who always welcome her melody with open arms. In an effort to eternalize Bindi’s song, one of the scientists made a recording and posted it online, attaching a picture of the baby whale.
“This is Bindi,” the post read, “hear her song.” The response was quick and overwhelming. People loved Bindi, and they loved her song. The research center became flooded with emails, letters, and even visitors, all wanting to hear more of the whale’s tune. One particularly talented admirer created this necklace, a silver pendant engraved with a small, silver whale, her head reaching up as if about to break into song. She sent it to the biologists at the research center, who fell in love with the symbol of their beautiful friend. The researchers wrote back:
“Please send more. We love your work.” They waited weeks for a response, checking inboxes and mailboxes twice each day just in case they missed it the first time. After three weeks, a response came.
“Thank you for your admiration, but more importantly, thank you for sharing Bindi with the world. Alas, as she is the only one of her kind, I find it fitting that this necklace be the only one of its kind.”
